I was just in Europe where I was given a bottle of Coca-Cola dating to 1962 I could not believe how good it was after so many years. I asked my host where he got it and he told me that his father had purchase a truck load of it before they went to the "New Coke" and kept them in his wine cellar as he did not like the new Coke. He told me that the taste of coke changed when they went from using sugar to using corn syrup that is much cheaper and all those stories about loosing the recipe were just marketing ploys. Had anyone heard this before?

  2. it's a shame the old coke has gone.  I thought that you can get coke in mexico that has real sugar in it, but I'm not positive.  Personally, I think they should have stuck to real sugar.  But nooo, there is too much corn to use up so they have to find some way to extract sweetness from corn and use it in the drinks.  It shouldn't matter that sugar is more expensive for sodas.  They're reaping huge profits anyway, eh?

  3. Coke did produce a "new" sweeter coke because Pepsi was gaining market share.  The new Coke was a disaster, so they reintroduced Coke "Classic".  There have been many subtle changes in the formula over the years, no doubt some due to cost of ingredients.

  4. yea the suger type is better  you know how coke  got the name.... it was originaly a medacin  and had cocain in it till the 1900's

  5. Yeah. Well, at least not the history part. But there's a little market near my house that sells Mexican coke. The only differences from the American version is that it's made with real sugar and not corn syrup. The real sugar really does make a difference.

  6. in the 1970s they did change the recipe and taste to make more money and profits

  7. "New Coke" was awful.  The recipe that they went to after that isn't exactly the same.  But here's something else to consider:  Soda used to be put into glass bottles.  THICK glass bottles.  The glass was fairly impermeable to gas.  These plastic bottles used today, they seem to change the flavor of the drink too.  I know I can buy one of the small 6 or 8 ounce Cokes in a glass bottle today, and it doesn't taste like the Coke that's in the plastic bottles.

But you're right that today's "old" Coke doesn't taste like the Coke I grew up drinking.  And you're probably right about the sugar vs. corn syrup part, too; I've heard other people say the same about Dr Pepper, and there is a place in Texas where you can still buy Dr Pepper made from the true original recipe.
