The teams that did not make it – Part 10 – ICC World Cup 2011
With a target of 190 runs to defend against one of the most formidable Indian batting line-ups in recent times, the Dutch bowler’s knew they could not afford to under-perform again.
Pieter Seelaar was the pick of the Dutch bowlers with his three wicket haul yet the Indian’s were too strong in the batting department. They cruised to the target in 37 overs and that too for the loss of only five wickets.
The Dutch side had two games left to play in Group B and to everyone’s surprise still had an outside chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
In order to do that they had to win their two remaining games, the first of which of was against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zahur-Ahmed-c98518 Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.
Though the Dutch side had not won a match, they had won almost every toss, and they continued that impressive record when they won the toss and elected to bat against the Bangladesh team.
Putting up scores below the 200 run mark had become the trademark of the Dutch side’s campaign and they only proved it when they slumped to a 160 run total. Ryan ten Doeschate was the only performer scoring a half century as his team-mates lost their wickets
at regular intervals.
By now everyone knew what to expect from the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 when it came to their bowling and the bowlers seemed to oblige the critics once again.
Tim http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mudassar-Bukhari-c77863 took a wicket each in another disappointing showing. The Bangladeshi batsmen had the match wrapped up in the 42nd over with six wickets to spare, as the Dutch were now effectively
out of the running for a top four group finish.
With nothing but pride and the chance for recording their first win in the tournament on the line the Dutch side entered Eden Gardens in Kolkata, to square off against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751.
After losing the toss, something the Dutch were not too used to, the Men in Orange went in to bat in the first innings. The absence of pressure seemed to free the batsmen, as they raced away to a 306 run total in 50 overs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wesley-Barresi-c96487 started well for the Dutch side, scoring a well paced 44 runs before he was dismissed. Unlike previous matches that did not signal a batting collapse as Ryan ten Doeschate powered his way to a 106 runs. His century consisted of a remarkable
13 fours that were garnished with a huge six.
Captain Peter Borren also decided to join the party with a blistering 84 run knock coming off 82 balls, as he tried to compete with Doeschate’s 13 fours. He fell three boundaries short but, his 10 fours provided plenty of entertainment for the crowd.
Half the job was done, but again a lot depended on the Dutch bowlers and once again their frailties were exposed. Tim Cooper’s two wickets were the highlight of the bowling, as the Irish crashed the Dutch party as they reached the 307 total with just over
two balls to spare and with six wickets still in hand.
The Netherlands showed glimpses of brilliances with the bat but their lack of consistency in the batting department and poor bowling had let them down as they finished their ICC World Cup 2011 campaign without recording a single win.
