The teams that did not make it – Part 14 – ICC World Cup 2011

Much was made of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 team not qualifying for the quarter-finals of the ICC World Cup 2011, yet it was one of the host nations, Bangladesh that came closer to reaching the last eight stage of the competition.
Managing an impressive six points in Group B with three sensational wins in front of their home fans, it came down to a poor run rate that ultimately cost them a prolonged run in the competition.
The Bangladeshi side took on pre-tournament favourites, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, in their opening match of their World Cup campaign at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The side with the home advantage won the toss and opted to send the Indians in to bat in the first innings. The move cost the Bangladeshi bowlers dearly, as they were punished by the Indian batsmen all over the park.
When the Bangladeshi side walked in to bat they seemed a determined unit who wanted nothing more than to put on a show for their fans. Bangladesh’s top order deserved praise after a spirited batting performance, as at one stage the side were at 234 runs
for the loss of only four wickets.
Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal’s 70 runs and Captain Shakib Al Hasan’s 55 runs seemed to put the Bangladeshi side in a strong position in the match. That is however before the lower order collapsed for just 49 runs as Bangladesh slumped to a total of 283 runs.
Though the total was more than respectable, it was a case where the Bangladeshi side knew they could have achieved much more. With that thought fresh in their mind, Bangladesh took on Ireland’s team at the Shere Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur, for the
side’s second match.
Putting together a total of 205 runs before being bowled all out by Ireland with four balls in the innings to spare, the Bangladeshi team seemed to be heading for an embarrassing defeat.
Tamim gave another solid performance with a 44 run knock and wicket-keeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Raqibul-Hasan-c84039 contributed with a useful 36 and 38 run knocks respectively. The total though was not enough and the Bangladeshi bowlers knew they were treading
on thin ice when they entered the pitch.
What ensued was, at least for Bangladesh’s fans, an entertaining and equally tense game of cricket. Bangladesh’s bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shafiul-Islam-c89295 took four wickets in a performance that may very well be the reason his side emerged victors. The Irish were bowled all
out for 178 runs, as the Bangladeshi side recorded their first win of their World Cup campaign by a narrow margin of 27 runs.
With their first win in the bag and two points on the board the Bangladeshi squad awaited the arrival of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 team at Mirpur’s Shere Bangla National Stadium eagerly. Instead of building on their win against the Irish, the Bangladeshi team took
ten steps backward and were bowled all out for a miserable 58 run total.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Ashraful-c1992 were the only two batsmen from their side to reach double figures with 25 and 11 runs respectively. The pressure was again on Bangladesh’s bowlers, as they had a mountain to climb in the second innings.
