The teams that did not make it – Part 3 – ICC World Cup 2011
Pakistan themselves needed a win to secure a place in the knock-out stage and it seemed that the Men in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Green-c60723 wanted it more, as they reached the target of 162 runs in 34.1 overs with the Duckworth-Lewis system being put into practice.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 yet they still had one more match in their group to go, as they faced their African rivals Kenya, in a match that had more to do with pride than anything else.
Zimbabwe’s impressive record of winning tosses continued when they opted to bat first at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata against the Kenyans. In what was a strong team effort the Zimbabweans put an impressive total of 308 runs for the loss of only six wickets
in their allotted 50-overs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tatenda-Taibu-c92882 scored a well paced half century and Vusi Sibanda and Craig Ervine also starred with 61 runs and 66 runs respectively.
It seemed that playing without any pressure really allowed the Zimbabwe side to express themselves, as their bowlers matched their side’s batting display and they demolished the Kenyan batting line-up. Greg Lamb, Graeme Cremer and Ray http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Price-c82662 each picked up
two wickets, as the Kenyans crawled their way to a 147 total.
Zimbabwe ended their campaign on a high with an enormous 161 run victory against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752, though they would rather have wished to prolong their stay in the competition.
Canada
The Canadians were, to put it lightly, favourites not to go through and only the fool hardy would bet for them making it through to the knock-out stages, yet that did not stop the side from across the Pacific Ocean from trying.
They started their World Cup campaign at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota against the host nations and some would argue one of the favourites to go to win the cup, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
The Canadians lost the toss and were put to field first and they suffered heavily at the hands of the experienced Sri Lankan batsmen. With a target of 333 runs set by the Sri Lankans in the allotted 50-overs, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 knew they had a very slim chance of getting
anything out the game, as they took to the field to bat in the second innings.
Only three Canadian batsmen managed to reach double figures with Rizwan Cheema’s 37 runs earning him the honour of being his side’s top scorer. Canada’s woes was brought to an end in the second last ball of the 37th over when Henry Onside lost
his wicket with the side having managed to accumulate only 122 runs on the board. The Canadian side’s World Cup campaign got off to the worst possible start with a 210 run defeat.
Not to be deterred by the result the Canadians looked to recover against the Zimbabweans at the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Vidarbha-c860 Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Having lost the toss the Canadians were made to field in the first innings much like in their first match, and
similar to that as well they suffered at the hands of the Zimbabweans who managed to amass a total that, some would argue, took the match out of the Canadian side’s hands there and then.
