The teams that did not make it – Part 6 – ICC World Cup 2011
In a dismal display, or lack thereof, of batting only three Kenyan batsmen managed to reach double figures. The highest scoring batsmen had only 16 runs to show for themselves.
The Kenyan bowlers did not perform any better than their batting counterparts as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 reached the target without the loss of a single wicket. It was a rude wake up call for the Kenyan side as the reality of the task hit them full on.
There was not much time for them to recover, as they took on Pakistan at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium at Hambantota in what was labeled as a tough encounter for both sides.
The label however seemed misplaced, as Pakistan dominated the Kenyans from start to finish. The side from Kenya was in the field for the first innings with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 starting with the bat. None of the Kenyan bowlers were any match for the Pakistani batting
line up, as the Men in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Green-c60723 amassed a more than impressive total of 317 runs.
What was shocking was that 46 of those runs were extras. The Kenyan bowlers were all over the place with their line and length and in the end got what they were asking for. The Kenyan batsmen knew the gravity of the task that lay ahead them when they went
out to bat in the second innings against one of the most formidable bowling line-ups in the modern game.
In another drab batting display the Kenyans were bowled all out for a miserable total of 112 runs. The only bright ray of hope for the side was the performance of Collins Obuya. The batsman entertained the crowd with an aggressive knock of 47 runs that consisted
of three fours and just as many sixes.
Kenya had an idea of how hard it would be to try and find a place in the top four, as they suffered another humiliating defeat, this time at the hands of the Pakistanis after a crushing margin of 205 runs.
The side from Africa did not have long to collect themselves, as they soon found themselves at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo against the host nations Sri Lanka. Having won the toss the captain Jimmy Kamande decided to bat first.
Much to his side and his nation’s displeasure http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752 were struggling again at eight runs for the cost of wickets with both their opening batsmen losing their wickets early on. It seemed to be a cue for Collins Obuya and David Obuya to salvage some pride for
their side, as they built up an impressive partnership.
Scoring 94 runs together the pair led their side to a more respectable position before http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Collins-c51521 Obuya departed for 52 runs and David Obuya followed soon after for 51 runs. That signaled a Kenyan collapse, as four batsmen were dismissed without adding a single
run to the scoreboard.
The Kenyan’s collapsed once again to a less than impressive total of 142 runs in 43.4-overs. With one of the worst bowling attacks in the competition in terms of wickets taken, the Kenyan side knew they had to raise their game if they wished to save face.
That did not happen, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 cruised to the 146 run total for the loss of only one wicket. Kenya slumped to their third successive defeat and that too in humiliating fashion.
