The teams that did not make it – Part 8
Batting first in what was Kenyan veteran http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SO-Tikolo-c2546, however, was not having the send off he had hoped for as he went for seven runs
an over finishing with figures of seven overs bowled at the cost of 49 runs with no wickets taken.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752’s excellent batting performance against the Australians in the previous match should have given them more self belief, yet it seemed that was just a flash in the pan. Nehemiah Odhiambo’s 44 run knock was all the Kenyans had to cheer about as they slumped
to a 147 run total in 30 overs.
Steve Tikolo’s farewell from international cricket ending on a disappointing note as he made only 10 runs before being trapped leg before wicket by Price. The Zimbabweans shook Tikolo’s hand and gave his a round of applause as he departed from the crease,
as cricket bid farewell to one of Kenya’s greatest cricketing sons.
Kenya’s campaign can be described in one word and that is dismal. The side from Africa failed to register a single win in the tournament and will need to go back to the drawing board if they wish to push on ahead instead of fading away from the game.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757,
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 and England were the favourites to qualify but the fourth position was open for any team with enough guile and passion to claim the spot.
Netherlands
The only squad to wear orange kits in the international stage were the outsiders of the group. Very few had given them the chance to go on and earn a top four place to qualify for the quarter-final stage of the competition. The Dutch side had a tricky opening
match against England at the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Vidarbha-c860 Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Things started on a bright note for the Netherlands as they won the toss and elected to bat in the first innings.
Surprising everyone, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 amassed a more than respectable total of 292 runs for the loss of only six wickets in 50 overs. The star of the show was undoubtedly Dutch batsman, Ryan ten Deoschate, with his blistering 119 runs off just 110 balls. The
knock consisted of nine fours and three devastating sixes. Doeschate was supported well by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tom-Lexley-William-Cooper-c94199 with his 47 runs and captain, Peter Borren’s unbeaten 35 runs.
The batsmen had done their job as all attention turned to the Dutch bowlers to defend the impressive total. Yet, while the Dutch batsmen had been outstanding, the bowlers were found lacking as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 won the match with six wickets to spare.
While the Dutch may have lost their opening match, their performance particularly with the bat showed signs of promise and teams were now aware that they were to be taken seriously. The Dutch would have wanted to try and get a result against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760
in their second match, but they knew they needed to improve their bowling if they hoped for any success.
