  1. Engine temperature is monitored using a thermostat so if that is malfunctioning, it might be reading the temperature incorrectly. Take it to a garage and have it checked. Also check your engine oil levels (using the dipstick, which you can locate by referring to your car manual) - if your engine oil levels are low, this might be causing the engine to over heat.

  2. If it's not running hot, then you probably have a bad sending unit or a short in the wiring somewhere.

  3. Yes you have plenty of warm because the temp light is telling you your problem is too much heat from the motor. Your fan motor or fan belt is in operational or your coolant or coolant pump needs service. You will ruin your engine if it overheats due to "head shear". Any red light means "STOP" and service the problem. Red means Stop when in the car, while driving at the intersection, in signs, all of the above. We choose "red" to denote a significant warning. Read your manual, car and driving and you will see that this is a built in concept that allows for a action with no thought needed (for a reason).

  4. It a good possibility that the thermostat needs changing. This governs the flow of coolant through the engine. If it is stuck shut, this will prevent the cooler coolant from flowing through the engine from the radiator and cause you to overheat. You could be completely full, but if the exchange of cooler fluid doesn't take place it will be too hot. Something you want to have checked right away. Overheating can result in a cracked block and then your looking at a much more expensive repair.
