The title showdown – Sterling Moss (Part 1)
This championship has been the worst for gamblers due to the unpredictability factor and with just 4 races remaining, it makes it even more unpredictable. That is what every sport hopes of achieving one day and Formula 1 is luckily in that position currently.
It would not surprise anyone if the Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso or any of the top five becomes the champion by the end of this year.
Sterling Moss believes that the cars now seem pretty much at the same level and it is obvious that certain tracks will favour a particular team. The legendary driver said that he has not driven any of the new cars so he cannot say much about that. However,
he was aware what it is like to be challenging for the championship and this title in particular, depends on the driver’s strengths and weaknesses.
Mark Webber is currently leading the drivers’ standings and Moss thinks that he has done a great job to achieve what he has right now. There is no question about it the team has the ability to hold onto this advantage and enable Mark to maintain his lead
as well. That is the reason why he is the favorite driver of this championship yet but he is not the champion yet and there is still a long way to go. The current championship leader has been very consistent since the past couple of races and that is the key
to the title as said by the top 5 drivers themselves. His experience has started to pay off and keeping in mind that he has never been in this position before, he is handing it very well giving him a very good chance of winning.
His toughest competitor has to be his closes rival in the championship hunt: Fernando Alonso. The Ferrari driver has been outstanding since the past two races and is the most reliable competitor as he is in his momentum. Fernando is as fast as one can imagine
a 2-time world champion to be and on top of that, the point’s difference between the two is just 11 points. If we convert this difference to the old points system, it is just a mere 4-5 points. Therefore, Moss believes the even if the Ferrari is not performing
better than the Red Bull, Alonso still might have the edge due to his extra ordinary pace and championship experience. “We all know how good Ferrari were at taking titles in the Michael Schumacher era and I think we are starting to see a re-emergence of that
under Alonso”, said Moss.
Now we all know that if Ferrari wins the title, plenty of people will point their fingers against Ferrari due to the team-orders controversy at the German Grand Prix and label it as a “stained championship”.
However, Moss disagrees with all these allegations but admits that Ferrari did not handle the situation in the best way. The legendary driver believes that the there will be more liberal ruling on team orders in the future and the 2010 German grand prix
will be labelled as an irregularity in the rules rather than menacing to Ferrari’s credit.
Lewis Hamilton is currently in third play and seems to be a very unfortunate driver currently as he put himself in a situation where he should not be since the past two grand prix therefore; he is in a worse position now. Sterling likes his aggressive approach
to racing but this is a scenario where he has to be careful if he wants to be the champion for the second time. “I like his aggressive approach to racing, but in that scenario I would have preferred to see him sit back on the first lap and then be the racer
that we know he can be later on”, he added.
Lewis is inclined to go too hard too quickly and the Singapore grand prix was an example of that when he tried a move on Mark Webber immediately after the safety car period. Keeping in mind there is nothing wrong with taking opportunities like this but he
should have known his priorities and settled for a safer approach.
However, looking at is wider championship chances, one should not forget that Hamilton and McLaren have created one of the best package the Formula 1 has ever seen. “They are very capable of winning at the final four races and, more than any other team,
you feel they could take advantage of a mistake by their rivals, which could be the difference between winning and losing this championship”, said Moss.
