  1. In case of a very rare catastrophic rapid depressurization, it will keep you from being "sucked" from the aircraft.

Really though, airlines ask you to have it fastened during cruise because of a phenomenon known as "Clear Air Turbulence", which is not detectable by the aircraft's onboard systems. In the event of sudden severe CAT, anyone not securely fastened (such as flight attendants) can be thrown about violently, sometimes even into the ceiling of the aircraft. Therefore, in order to prevent lawsuits and ensure passenger safety.

  4. Your cabin crew will fasten it for you if you do not fasten it esp. if you are in a Lufthansa flight as I experienced it.

  5. To keep your teeth marks off the seat in front of you if the A/C comes to a sudden stop

  6. In a plane?

To keep you in your seat if there is some turbulence.

To keep you in your seat so you are not in the way of the air crew.

To keep you in your seat if there is a rapid decompression.

But the seatbelt in a plane is no where near the quality of the seatbelt shoulder harness system of a car.   There never was any intention of it holding you in your seat no matter what.  Even the seats do not stay put in a major crash.    If you do not believe me,  take a look at the four point seat belt system the flight crew uses.
