The top ten highest paid managers in the English Premier League, Part 2
Harry Redknapp had vowed that Portsmouth would be his last club, but moved to Tottenham Hotspurs when he was offered a £3m deal until 2013. He started off as a football player and then after his retirement turned to managing. He has previously managed Bournemouth, West Ham United, Southampton and Portsmouth twice. He won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in the 2008 season.
His job at West Ham and the first spell at Portsmouth ended because of disagreements with the management, after which he went to Southampton for a short spell. He returned to Portsmouth and his challenge was to save the club from relegation. He managed to do just that and after rebuilding the team the following season, led them to a ninth place finish. His next stop was at Tottenham after the sacking of Juande Ramos. In his first full season with the club, they finished fourth in the Premier League table, earning a chance to play in the Champions League.
David Moyes, the Everton manager recently renewed his contract and was rewarded with a £3.2m a year contract until 2013. Moyes started his managerial career at Preston before joining Everton in 2002. Upon his appointment, Moyes told reporters, at his unveiling press conference, “I am from a city (Glasgow) that is not unlike Liverpool. I am joining the people's football club. The majority of people you meet on the street are Everton fans. It is a fantastic opportunity, something you dream about. I said 'yes' right away as it is such a big club”. He has been at Goodison Park since then.
In his first season he managed to sustain good form, which saw the club avoid relegation. Everton have been consistent since then, finishing in the top half of the Premier League table. In the 2004-2005 Season, they even managed to finish fourth, securing a place in the following season’s Champions League. Even though Moyes did not have unlimited funds for transfers, he made the most of what he had, bringing in players like Tim Cahill, Marcus Bent, Mikel Arteta and Phil Neville, among others. Since the 2007-2008 Season to the current season, Everton have displayed growing stability and Moyes’s 2003, 2005 and 2009 League Managers Association Manager of the Year awards appear justified.
Sir Alex Ferguson is at the half mark with £3.6m on a contract that never seems to expire. The Scottish manager has been with Manchester United since 1986. The 24-years with the English club make him the second longest serving manager in the club’s history, after Sir Matt Busby. Ferguson is the most successful amongst the current managers, having won various awards and breaking records along the way.
In his first season at United, Ferguson focused on disciplining the team and managed to get them to 11th place in the table. After four years with the club, the Scotsman won his first League title, that too with style, finishing ahead of the runners-up with a 10 point gap. He repeated his success in 1993-1994, winning the League and Cup double.  United’s greatest success to date, the treble came in 1999, United dominated domestically and in Europe as they won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. The same year Ferguson received knighthood for his services to the game.  Even though United won the Premier League in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 season, it was seen as a failure since they did not do too well in Europe. Ferguson was expected to retire after the 2001-2002 season, but he continued and that season United won their eighth Premier League title. The 69-year old is still going strong, having won some 4 Premier League titles, various FA and Carling Cups and the Champions League once since then.
