I am new to baseball and maybe I am not understanding what a trade deadline is.

  1. waivers

  2. Until the last day of August, teams can waive certain players from their team.  If another team wants him they can put in a claim for that player.  The team that wins the waiver breakdown then they can bid for him and make a trade with the original team to acquire that player.  It creates kind of more of a controlled trade process, and allows teams to try and stop other teams from getting certain players.

  3. You can put players on waivers. The trading deadline is only a big deal because most GMs lie to deal then because it is easier.

  4. same reason dunn is going to the dbacks.. waivers

  5. After the trade deadline is past (up until the end of August), a team can still make trades if a player clears "waivers." A player  is released onto a waiver wire for a period of days. Once that period is up, if no team has claimed said player, a team can trade that player.

The trick is that a rival team can block player released on waivers if they choose to pick up the released player off the waivers. Take the case of Adam Dunn. He was put on waivers, not claimed by any team, and was then cleared to be traded.

Claiming a player on waivers is complicated, as well. The team that released the player can still "reclaim" them, if your team has signed them off waivers. However, there is the possibility that team will not.
