  1. We have been drilling and pumping oil up here in Alaska since 1977. The wildlife are just fine with the pipeline.

  2. Construction began on March 27, 1975 and was completed on May 31, 1977.

First oil moved through the pipeline on June 20, 1977.

In 1978, about 670,000 gallons of oil spilled after a hole was blasted with explosives near Fairbanks. No one has ever been arrested or charged for the incident.

October 4, 2001 Trans-Alaska Pipeline Shot By A Drunk. A jury found Daniel Lewis guilty of criminal mischief, assault and drunk driving, all felonies, and the misdemeanor counts of oil pollution and misconduct involving a weapon, and causing 285,000 gallons of crude to coat a forested area has been ordered to pay over $17 million in restitution for the act.

  4. I live in North Pole Alaska and the pipeline goes right past my house.

When the pipeline was first built the caribou population in the northern part was 600,000.  Today there is 2,000,000 of them.  30+ years ago there was 5,000 polar bears - now we have 25,000 of them.  Not sure why they were put on the endangered species list with those statistics on the polar bears - must be the new eco-math??

With the exception of one freak accident and the idiot who shot it with the 338 Win Mag rifle - there are have been no spills.  Two years ago we had a 7.2 earthquake that was felt 4,000 miles away in Texas - the pipeline swayed a little - but no spill.  In any other country or state hit by that magnitude of quake you would have been reading of thousands killed and total distruction of roads, buildings and infrastructure.

Bottom line - the pipeline and the people who take care of it have been good stewarts to the enviroment and animals of Alaska.  The animals have certainly benefited.

    Hope this helps.
