  1. Dealer deals two cards to everyone, and one card is faceup for everyone.

    You know both of yours.

Counting cards takes a very quick mind to do, and good acting to pull off, but it is doable outside casinos that do not have electric card shufflers.

    It is NOT illegal.

  2. When dealing from a shoe (4,6,or 8 decks) the cards are dealt face up to the players. They can not touch these cards.

When dealing from a single or double deck, they are pitched face down to the players. The players pick the cards up but can only use one hand to hold them to minimize cheating.

There are exceptions to both of the above rules. Some casinos insist on doing things different, like face up double deck.

In both cases the dealer turns one of his/her cards face up.

It's rare to find face down games outside of Las Vegas.

Card counting IS NOT illegal unless you use a device (other than doing it in your head) to help you track cards. Then it's cheating and possibly a felony. The Vegas casinos can stop you from playing if they think your counting.

  3. As everyone is saying (almost) in single deck games they are dealt face down, simply to keep the players from being able to see how many 10 value cards are out, the dealer gets one face up.  In multi deck shoes, everyone and all the action is face up except the dealer has one hole card.

  4. Both are correct.

In North America almost every casino deals blackjack the way you describe it. Some casinos that use 1 deck on VIP tables will deal it with the players cards face down. But everything else is as you describe.

The dealer having 1 card is something that is mostly seen in Europe and even there rarely outside of Monte Carlo. Some charity casinos in North America and a few native casinos use the Monte Carlo style with no hole card for the dealer.

Counting cards is not illegal if you do not use any tool (no computers or electronic devices) but it is pretty much useless in any modern casino.
