  1. Moolie got it bang on.

Alot of the brands now also use the hump to store a very small and basic black box that stores riders temperature, suit temp inside and out, G metres long & lat etc.

All these items are to give the manufacturers as much info as possible to help improve there product.

Team KR (once) used the hump the store bike to pits radios, but it was too heavy and the idea was scrapped after only one race.

  2. They use it for aerodynamics

I put beer in mine. It has a hydro pack

  3. it started as an aerodynamic aid in the smaller classes (125 & 250) it has filtered through to the MotoGP class

Garry Mcoy had a drink container fitted to his for the Sth African GP in 02 I think, and quite a few riders now use this idea for hot races

  4. Its for aerodynamics. Smooth flow from helmet down the back.

  5. I will go along with Moolie and Wiggysan. Aerodynamics and modern telecommunications. with a little back protection thrown in with the design to stop the helmet crashing backwards during a high side.  but mostly airflow.

  6. It really doesn't have a real purpose. It's not something that makes a big deal. An armature doesn't need it, really. But in Moto GP every little thing counts. So it is used for aerodynamics. But just because even .001 of a second counts as well.
