Good afternoon,

I have a question regarding the pronunciation of one of the present tense conjugations of the verb "leer." I was always taught that the el, ella, Ud. form of the verb (lee) was pronounced "lay." However, another teacher corrected my pronunciation and said that the proper way to pronouce this form is "lee" (long e). What say you, oh linguistic experts??

Thank you in advance for all answers.

  1. Your teacher is right. You should hear both "e"s. Like lay- ay

  2. uh thats wrong its leh-eh ^^

  3. My wife says "lay"

    Sorry, "lay ay"

I double checked with the wife!

  4. Correct. It is not "lay" it is more with a long e. Should sound like "lay-e"

  5. "Lee" as in "Él lee", "Ella lee" is pronounced  [ LEH-eh ]

As you can see, it's two consecutive [ eh ]'s that sound as one long (not so long) "e", while stressing only the first one.
