we are going to cairns in april, and are wondering that the quicksilver pontoon thing that floats at the outer reef, the water next to it - is it deep/scary???

i saw many pics of the children snorkelling at 'the pontoon' but it had them like literally 30cm above the coral, but isnt the pontoon out at sea where it is deep?

so yea just wondering does it take far to get to the shallow reef/is it deep?

thnx

  1. The reef near by is less than 2m deep but it drops off to approx 10m and more. Don't worry the area is roped off and there are heaps of people to help nervous swimmers. The water is usually crystal clear with visibility to over 80m+ .

The "Jesus line" trails from the duck board ( rear of pontoon) to the reef edge.  Its approx a 15 m swim to the shallow water.

DON"T BE PUT OFF DO IT you won't regret it.

  2. Don't be scared at all. Quicksilver go to Agincourt reef which is right near the edge of the continental shelf so there are going to be varying depths of water all within 15 - 30m of the pontoon. Like Jane up there said, it's all roped off and the water is crystal clear, not scary at all. The staff there are fantastic people and if you let them know you're nervous they'll go out of their way to look after you. Honestly one of the best reef cruises in Cairns, you're going to have a great time.

  3. no fish have drowned there
