  1. Just turn the valve a little bit closed.

The hammering is a result of just enough water high/low to cause this

chatter. Just adjust the valve open or closed while its chattering and you will find out where it stops.

    Been there done that

  2. Shut off the water to the whole house. Open all the faucets in the house and let all the water run out. Then shut off the faucets and turn the water back on. That should stop it.

  3. Bleeding the line is for removing air.  Just how much air do you have in the pipes.  Have you cut off your water recently?

I normally bleed my lines by starting with the highest tub in the house, and running the water in there, until it stops spitting and splashing.  Then I hit the sinks, and last I hit the toilets.  For all standard plumbing fixtures, just run to the water to bleed the air out of the lines.  The reason for starting with the tubs, is that the line for the toilet is usually small, and it will take a long time to push all the air out of the line.
