since i was twelve(now 15) i have been making short little video films with my friends, and would add good video effects, and stuff like that, (pretty much like filming and using angles with cameras in awesome ways), to become a movie director, do you need to be "gifted" with good story writing skills or is it something you can get really good at by taking classes on it? because i want to be a movie director, i like getting behind the camera and expressing ideas, but, i dont know if im right for the job if i dont know how to tell awesome stories, am i in a good spot for a future as a film director if i take some classes on script writing?

  1. Alex,

You are on right track. Keep messing around with all that you can lay your hands on. Yes, a formal training would help. However, understand the difference between camer man, editor, the effects and so on and so forth.

I don't think that you need to be gifted with writing skills. However, a gift of imagination and a sense of mental visulaization will help. As a director you also need to be upto speed with your target audience and the team. In most cases, you will have specialists for all jobs like lighting, camera, dialogs, editing, story and so on....

However, till you reach that stage, double up for all the aspects of a movie. Create as many small movie, skits and plays as many you can.

    All the best!

  2. Anything you can learn can contribute to your success - but directors don't usually involve themselves in the script writing. It sounds as though you are on the right track. Check out a college of visual arts that you might want to attend when you get a little older, and keep on doing what you are doing. If you can, enter some of your videos in competitions, just to start building a reputation.

  3. Your desire is your first step. The skills will be learned by continuing in your interest. The main thing is education, good grades, a college degree, and acceptance in the Hollywood Screen Director's Guild. But there are other ways. This may be of some help:
