Question:

The weather men from my area says because we have a cap?

we cant get storms, what is a cap? Its really hot here so is it too hot to storm or rain?

  1. Awesome answer, Sturm, and may I add that all locations have this scenario at one time or another, because it is due to influence from a high pressure system. The cap is not everlasting - it is just indicative of stable conditions at the time, and with approaching low pressure to destabilize the atmosphere, combined with low-level moisture, thunderstorms once again become possible and/or inevitable.

    So, on most storm-free days, thank your cap/ inversion.


  2. A cap is short for a capping inversion, which is the increase of temperature with height above the surface. Air is unable to rise in this situation. Since thunderstorms require rising air, they will not form because of the cap. Other factors that don't allow thunderstorm development is a lack of moisture, lack of heat, and lack of instability.
