I was thinking about buying an HDTV but I'm not sure if a HDTV will still work after February.

Will it or would I have to buy a converter anyways?

  1. Yeah, almost every new HD set will. If it's flat, there's a 99.999% chance you're safe. Anything from the major brands, including Vizio, Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, and others will have a digital tuner. No converter needed!

Also, if you have cable or satellite, you don't need a converter even if you have an old TV.

  2. HD tv's (all but the older ones labeled "HD ready") have atsc (digital) tuners built in. More simply put, you won't need a converter box. You may need a new/better antenna since the digital broadcasts aren't as strong as the analog.

  3. You are doing a VERY wise thing.  It's the TVs with the old "analogue" tuners that may be in trouble come February 2009. Almost all TVs made as of this year should have the new "digital" tuners in them. Actually, many already had them earlier.
