  1. chess is one of the best games ever, practice online there are many sites to choose from

  2. Rules at US Chess Federation web site - http://www.uschess.org/beginners/letspla...

Play at Yahoo Chess - http://games.yahoo.com/ch.

Find a local club to play, from US Chess Federation - http://main.uschess.org/component/option...

Get your wife to teach you.

  3. Buy a high quality PC chess program, like Chessmaster. It has a fantastic coaching mode for beginners, designed and narrated by an American International Grandmaster, Josh Waitzkin.

I know its not free, but maybe the last version (before the current one) is in the shops for £10 or less.

  4. You need an interface.  Winboard comes with gnuchess.

    It is free.

  5. chess will enrich your mind and its always good to learn a famous game of intelectuals.

  6. Chess isn't a very socialable game. You might as well stay in.  It takes some considerable time to reach club player standard as well.

Have you considered other games, such as bridge, whist, backgammon, dominoes, scrabble and bingo. Perhaps something physical like bowls or croquet, might suit you better.  There are lots of boardgames and roleplaying groups about. They are always looking for new blood. Ask at your local games shop if it interests you.

  7. Chess...my A.R.S.E.    wots up with you...?

  8. hope the below links help you well :)

last one is Yahoo Chess online ;)

  9. If you're truly interested in chess, buy "Play Winning Chess" by Yasser Sierawan. It's superb, and covers the basics, including how the pieces move and is an excellent foundation to work from. It also explains some basic principles to start clocking up some wins!

For a free alternative, I believe one of the links provided by the first guy should do fine. Also, I believe Wikipedia explains the basics, just look up the main "chess" page. Chess is a really rewarding game, but you shouldn't feel forced to play.

On the plus side, chess should help with your concentration, visualisation and logic skills. Plus it feels great to crush someone with a series of moves they just couldn't work out!

    Good luck!

  10. tell you would rather play with her chest in bed......

  11. go to www.uschess.org, click on new to chess, lots of info

  12. Won't it be more fun and easier for her to teach you?

Also, the box should have playing instructions :)
