The winners and losers from the opening fixtures in the Champions League
The opening two days of the Champions League saw a host of teams go at it, to claim Europe’s grandest prize. However there were only going to be some winners and there were going to be some losers. Here is a look at the winners from the opening fixtures:
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Zlatan Ibrahimovic was on the back of a very disappointing run in with Milan over the weekend. The player even went on to miss a penalty and saw his debut match with the team end in defeat. However the player was determined
to prove to the team that he was worth every penny that was spent on him.
The player went into the game with the pressure of the world on his back, however the player proved his class by scoring a brilliant first goal, which was a true poachers finish. He then went on to score his and the teams second goal to seal the victory
for the team.
David Weir: David Weir, who is the Rangers captain, became the oldest player to ever play in the Champions League, when he took the field for the team. The defender knew that all eyes would be on him, just to point out that someone of his
age shouldn’t be participating in such an event that requires the maximum from the players. However the player went on to shut his critics up by having a more than solid performance. The match was being played against Manchester United at Old Trafford and
thanks to Weir’s defensive work at the back, the match ended as a goal less stale mate and saved the Rangers, as they took home a very unexpected point.
Cesc Fabregas: Once the new season kicked off, a lot of people were questioning the credibility that Fabregas held in the Arsenal side. The player was involved in one of the longest and most ridiculous transfer saga’s to ever take place.
Many experts believed that the player should have been allowed to leave, since he would not be playing at his maximum potential. However considering that Arsenal were already missing some of their first team players, the manager had no choice but to field
the teams captain.
Once the match was over it proved to be one of the best decisions that could have possibly been made. Fabregas was quite simply wonderful during the game. He went on to score two goals and set up three of the four other goals that the team score. Fabregas
was the pivotal figure in the Arsenal squad that was running riot on the pitch. The player was everywhere and proved to be the difference maker on the night.
Michael Essien: Chelsea were going into the match without Frank Lampard who is quite possibly the best play maker on the Chelsea squad. However With Ramires available, Essien was asked to fill in for the missing player. Considering Essien
is a far more defensive player, no one expected the player to play the way that he did. Essien dominated the midfield and was part of almost everything Chelsea did, he added the cherry to his performance by scoring a goal of his own. What Essien went on to
do is that he proved to the world that he is quite possibly one of the best midfielder in the world. It is also scary to think that Chelsea went on to win the English Premier League without the players services last season.
