The world’s biggest youth volleyball tournament to be held in Turku – Volleyball news
The Power Cup, which is believed to be the world’s biggest youth volleyball tournament, is annually held in Finland. The beautiful coastal town of Turku will serve the host for upcoming edition of Power Cup, which is set to take place from June 7-10.
The Kupittaa outdoor sports area situated at the middle of Turku will facilitate the participants of the campaign. About 300 outdoor courts will be set up for thrilling and joyful games.
The registration for the competition is open and around 719 teams have already registered, while the organisers expect more than 900 teams. Last year, 847 teams joined the memorable Power Cup.
The 2011 Power Cup tournament was held in Lahti, Finland and turned out to be huge success. Once again thousands of youngsters from 7 to 22 years of age will get the opportunity to showcase their sports skills in front of the bigger audience. It is likely
that more than 5’000 matches will be played among the participating teams.
The Project Manager of the Power Cup, Mrs. Päivi Harri, recently shared her views. She said, “We are very proud that as per the current figures we will have an increase of the players aged from 7 to 11 in comparison with last year’s edition in Lahti. This
is a good sign as many of these kids have just started playing Volleyball.”
Moreover, she expressed hope that the number of teams will also increase this year. Previously, the all-time record was set in 2007 when 951 teams participated in the Power Cup.
The tournament is not only attended by athletes from Finland but it also gets foreign visitors. Aspiring athletes from Sweden, Estonia, Russia, Iceland, Scotland, China, Italy, and many other countries come to take part in the Power Cup. So far, only 14
foreign teams have registered for the 2012 Power Cup but the local organizers are confident that this figure will move up significantly. The registration is open until May 4.
The Power Cup will be opened with a colourful ceremony, which will feature disco music for kids. Furthermore, Finland’s women’s national volleyball team will play friendly match at the opening ceremony of Power Cup.
