The worm in mezcal - taste and effects

Question

I am wondering about the worm in the mexican mezcal drink... is it really squishy and soft because of all the liquid or is it hard? are you meant to chew it if you eat it? and what are the effects, any difference? some people say it will make you sick or something if you eat it, or you will have hallucinations and stuff like that... probably made up but I am curious.
