Theater production?

i want to do a community theater production of A little Princess. I was gonna write the script based off the movie, produce it and direct it. How do I go about starting this. (Besides writing the script. Lol) Do I have to pay anything if I want to re-write the script because it's based off the movie? Do I have to call anyone? Please help.....I'm just a college student and I have no idea where to start with this stuff. I just act. Lol

Well, the movie is based off the classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The book and the movie are slightly different. I would say read the book and watch the movie to see if you can find your own way of interpretting things onto stage.

You need to find out who wrote the screenplay and who owns the rights to the screenplay - if you want to use that as a basis for your play then you'll have to get permission.

Multiple issues and at least one valid suggestion, so far.

  RIGHTS laws are pretty specific, even sometimes OWNED after an Author is dead, by many years.

   To RE-write it might still be considered infringement, and yes you might get away with it, but to PROFIT from anothers work OWNED, is essentially p****y, and if not litigated in some court, is at least, unethical.

   In essence you have not created an original, you've BORROWED, and again, while that may get a pass, it would be, NOT yours.

   All that said, there are NO more ORIGINAL ideas, only original ways to present ideas. Disney, and dozens of other studios/ writers/ etc. have made this the case for YEARS, BUT,,, they may have also acquired the RIGHTS to do so.

  Your better course of action might be to forget the film, use the original BOOK, and NOT assume others might not see similarities in YOUR "Original" RE-Interpretation
