  1. I lived in London, and it depends on the context. Some theaters decide to use the spelling "theatre" to sound old worldly. In the states, you will be considered incorrect to use the spelling theatre in an essay or something. Use theater in the US, theatre in England or if you're quoting from an article or theater with that spelling.

    I hope this helps!

  2. what do you mean 20 points? a best answer is 10 points...

  3. There really isn't a difference, the two words are interchangeable. Theatre is the British spelling and Theater is the American spelling.

Here are some websites that have more background on the spelling change:

  4. it is spelt theatre not theater

  5. They are both accepted spellings, like grey and gray.

I find that stage type theaters tend to refer to themselves as a "theatre", while a movie type theater is "theater".

Theatre is basically the French spelling, and we got the word from them.  Some people changed the spelling to make more sense for English.  Since stage theaters are more classic and traditional, maybe that is why they prefer the original spelling.

  6. Theatre refers to the department, where Theater refers to the auditorium. The answer you are looking for is Theatre is the way to spell it.
