Question:

Theists, if there was a pill that would temporarily cause you not to believe in god, would you take it?

This is a much shorter version of an earlier question.

Hypothetically, if there was a pill that would cause you not to believe in God, but only for a temporary time, would you take it? Your beliefs would return to normal after a few hours, something like an aspirin. Would you try it in order to better understand atheists and their beliefs?

Atheists, would you try a pill that would make you temporarily religious?

Agnostics, would you try both pills?

If taking several pills at once would give you a religious vision, would you try that? Would you try to hold true the beliefs that came to you in the vision, or would you go back to your old beliefs after it ended?

Keep in mind that taking the pills or not will in no way affect God's actual existence or non-existence in this scenario. This is not a trick question. If your answer is "God doesn't exist, why would I brainwash myself," "God is love," or "I'd grind them up and put them in Christians'/atheists' food," please save it. I'm looking for direct answers to the question, not evidence of how clever or witty you are or how vehement you are in your current beliefs.

  1. No, I already understand the religious views since I came from them.

  2. No,  I don't need a pill to help me understand others.  Christ helps me to do that.

  3. hallucinogenics are not good for the body or the mind so No!

  4. There are all sorts of pills that can change your perception, trust me, you don't magically revert back to 'normal'.  If your ultimate goal is to gather new knowledge, just to forget it later, then what is the point in living?

  5. >Theists, if there was a pill that would temporarily cause you not to believe in god, would you take it?

It's called the 'red pill'. ;P

I myself am of course an atheist.

    >Atheists, would you try a pill that would make you temporarily religious?

No! I'm dead against s******g my mind up with psychoactive substances, and I don't take anything more powerful than chocolate unless I have to. I much prefer to retain my rational faculties at all times. Interesting question, though!

  6. You mean like LSD or some other hallucinagen?  No.  I like my reality real, thank you very much.

  7. Sure.  I can intellectually understand that belief in god/God is down to faith.  But I have no idea what that actually feels like, since I've never had it.  It would be interesting to try maybe.

Would the experience make me more 'sympathetic'?  I'd hope not, in that I like to think I'm sympathetic as it is.  But one never knows.  A bit more tolerance can't hurt, surely?

Would I want a 'religious vision'?  Oh, I did consider it for a while.  Using MDMA to 'transcend' reality.  But then I decided that reality is where I live.  Better to get used to it than 'escape'.  Though that's just me, you understand?

    .

  8. I am religious and I would not take the pill to try to understand an Atheist better because I think it would be scary to have a feeling that there is no God. That once you die, everything is just over. I wouldn't want to [not believe in God] for any amount of time.

  9. Most Atheists were religious, they had researched their religion for weeks, months, years before becoming Atheists, so we don't need a pill, we already experienced it.

  10. Hard to believe it, but most atheists became atheists after they read their former holy book.

Most atheists were theists until they changed their minds.

I've already lived the religious life, and I don't want to go back--ever.

  11. I think Footy hit the nail on the head. (ex Baptist here)

Although, if I could take a pill to PERMANENTLY make me religious, I would.

    My explanation?

I'm not saying anything disrespectful, each to his own, but some people believe God as a FACT, and this is just the way I think about it, but if I could believe the lie that my dog went to a farm where he could run around and play all day, I would, instead of the reality that my dog got eaten by a coyote :|. I would also prefer to believe the lie that my ex gf went to Heaven for all eternity, instead of the cold reality that she is a rotting corpse buried underground.

  12. Anti-psychotic medication would do just that, for "believers".

Put them on meds for a few days, and then have them describe why they think their god is real.

    They would turn atheist immediately.

As for myself, I don't need a pill to understand religion.  I was a devout Baptist most of my life.

You will find that nearly all atheists have experienced religious delusion at one point in their life or another.  You will NEVER find a religious person who understands atheism, however.  Because once you see behind the curtain of religion, you can't pretend it's not a sham.

  13. No.

  14. Most atheists WERE religious.  We've walked in the other shoes and most know the bible better than Christians.  Its largely why we're atheists.

  15. no
