So, I have a black bed spread already (and I cant take it back) so I need something that will work with that. I was thinking of a zebra print or a old hollywood (black and white pics.)

Help me decide!!!

  1. Sunflowers.....they are beautiful

  2. Black would make consistency of your room..

  3. So the room is already yellow?

I love the idea of zebra or Hollywood black and whites, and the sunflower thing is nice, too.....but which one do YOU like better?  What will you get tired of?  What will you like for a long time?

Going Earthy - I actually have some gold walls and a fair amount of black at my house.  We've ended up toning them down with lots of neutrals from beiges, taupes, chocolates, blacks, creams and whites and some antiques and a slightly tropical theme in our rather eclectic home.  Something like that could work if you like things a little earthier.

Go Euro - Recently, there has been a wave of European-inspired art and accessories:  Black and White Eiffel Tower photographs, photographs of Italian Men and pretty women on the street in the 40's or 50's, also black and white, and I have a nice print that features blacks, greys, golds and greens of a couple on a street somewhere in France (a print of a painting).  Also, Target has carried lamps with a black finish that look like the Eiffel Tower.  Those are modern looks.  Black and espresso furniture finishes are still popular - but I hate how they look dusty so fast!

Traditional with a twist - If you want to add a touch of traditional, a black-and-white toile fabric would be a beautiful addition.  The boldness of your yellow walls would make it a very modern version of a timeless look.

Boutique Hotel - What if you added some broad yellow or white trim to the top of your bedspread to mimic hotel linens?  Or add a wide, colorful cover at the base of the bed in yellow, white, or even a third color, another boutique hotel trademark look?  Doing searches for hotels can lead to all sorts of interesting sources of inspiration.  One hotel painted a border around the wall  in one color (white) and the main color within it...a very effective way to make a huge, crisp, modern impact.  This sort of modern room is perfect for  the Hollywood and Zebra ideas you mentioned, too.  Any piece of artwork you have can be made to seem more important or to balance better with other pieces of artwork if you paint similar "mats" on the wall for the artwork to be mounted on. This is also a good way to make a small, undersized/poorly scaled piece of artwork have more "weight" and work better in a room.

Then there's the Bee Motif....stripes of yellow and black...lol! Just kidding, unless you are an entomologist....

Of course, it is a matter of taste, but I was thinking that a yellow and black room might not be the most restful color combination in the world...but if you don't want to paint the room a different color, adding a hefty dose of white to the room can help it feel both more modern and timeless and more soothing all at the same time, and really bring out the sunny, glowing side of the yellow.  Lots of white with small dashes of black accents that refer back to the bed would be fabulous.  But I wouldn't go wild with black accents, since the bed is already such a strong presence.

While black frames with white mats are very, very classic, you might also enjoy a chic white frame/white mat for your art or photos.

Do you have a camera?  Have you thought of doing your own black and white photography so that your artwork is really personal?  Any high-contrast color picture may be a good candidate for a black and white print, and it probably won't cost that much more than a nice print that someone else took!

I have a $20 5x8 zebra rug in a guest room - they still have them at our local Garden Ridge Pottery 2 years after I bought the first one...this might be a popular item at Garden Ridge Pottery stores everywhere.....

If the yellow isn't quite what you want with the black, consider repainting it a softer yellow.

If you aren't happy with the black bedspread, figure out why it bothers you and try to change it in some way.  I've already mentioned adding trim and a big throw across the bottom of it.  You can also use huge square Euro shams in a color or pattern that has just a touch of black trim on it...ditto for throw pillows.  Another possibility is to simply attach a border around the edge of the bedspread if it helps the transition from the bed to the floor or dustruffle or whatever.

If you really regret the black, and really wanted Tuscan or some other style for which the black won't EVER work, just bit the bullet and arrange to cover it, duvet-style, as soon as you can, or to simply replace it.   If you have to wait, then just wait.  It is ok.  Most rooms evolve according to their owner's budget!

  4. little miss sunshine.

  5. I would go with red and black theme.Put some throw pillows in red and black  on your bed.Get some picture frames all in black and one large red one to put the black ones around forming a rectangle.Red curtains with black tie backs. And if you go to wal-mart they have a really cool shag throw rug in black, red and yellow squares.Good Luck!

  6. I agree, the yellow walls with the black bed are a good starting point for a mod/Hollywood Regency look.

There is a picture of a room on this page with pink walls and a zebra rug -- think yellow instead of pink and I think you will be on to something:

As you see, the zebra rug would integrate well with the style.

I like the idea of black & white accessories, too, for example:

  7. A zebra print would be great. With an african safari theme. Compliment the yellow color chosen with brown shades. What do you think...sound WILD!!!! Best of locjk have fun decorating...be creative.

  8. Zebra print with hot pint!

  9. Taxi theme???

  10. Art Deco with yellow & black because you have the black bed cover.

Here's one example (use your black instead of the dark green sage): http://www.guesthouseinlanguedoc.com/ima...

  11. I would try to add another color to the room by using accent pillows.  If it's all black and yellow it'll look too bumble-beeish!

Try using pillows like these and pick up on another color for accents. Pink, orange or red might be a good choice.

  13. Hmmm, honestly? That shade of yellow and black together remind me too much of a bumblebee. Sunflowers are pretty, but I prefer to see them outside, and whenever I see them inside, it's in the kitchen - their outdated in my opinion. But if you must stick with that color on your walls, which by the way I like, you still have some good options. We just did my teen daughter's room in the pink/black/white zebra with some turquoise thrown in (3 pink walls, one turquoise accent wall) and it looks great. Not sure your age/taste, but could you perhaps see some bright orange and pink thrown in there in the form of art on the walls, throw pillows and even getting maybe thin/small swatches of fabric at a discount price to sew onto your black bedspread to add. (My daughters spread was multicolored zebra/pink/paisley). Don't forget the window treatments - we got a black wrought iron rod for about $12, and then put a regular double rod under it. On the iron rod, we hung a zebra valance (you could use either black, b&w, orange, pink, whatever. and then on the double rod we found some floor length black panels at K-mart for $10, that we use on either side to frame the window with floor length white sheers in between them - all very inexpensive. Then we got these floor length curtain beads at Penneys which are hot now, we used turquoise, you could use pink/orange, and put them on the 2nd (outer) double rod. I think this room would be very nice. Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be beautiful, remember sometimes less is more. A few black accesories like a nightstand, or black framed mirror, black picture frames, and a couple of bright paper lanterns or similar - such fun!! Good luck!
