Theo Epstein talks on Alfredo Aceves’ role in Boston Red Sox roster
General Manager of the Boston Red Sox, Theo Epstein, had the opportunity to talk on new Red Sox club member, Alfredo Aceves, who signed a major league deal with the franchise recently.
Many think the player is an addition in the bullpen but Theo has a different view on the matter.
"He's a versatile guy who can compete for a job in the bullpen but also provide valuable starting depth for us", Epstein said. "That's one area where we don't have tremendous depth with the composition of our roster and where we're at with the upper levels
of our farm system.
"We really needed that - someone who can start Major League games and compete in the American League East. His versatility and strike throwing and the fact that he's pitched well in this division stood out for us and made him a target".
Aceves can offer his services in the rotation as well and he will be competing with Tim Wakefield and Felix Doubront for the fifth space if it becomes available.
Epstein further went on to comment on Aceves. The general manager was remarking on the player’s two bullpen sessions he had carried out with the Red Sox. Last year, Aceves featured in just 10 games for the New York Yankees.
Unable to do more in the season, Epstein now believes he has regained his health and is ready to prove his critics wrong.
Theo went on to talk about the 2010 season Aceves had. He cited the player’s problem with the collar bone which came as a result of a bike riding accident as being the major reason for his weak performance.
However, he assured the press that he was looking better and he would be closely monitored over the next few weeks.
One of the names to come up for a potential role in the bullpen happens to be Dennys Reyes. The player signed a minor league deal but he has also availed the invitation for spring training.
The player will be facing stiff competition from other likely players, who will try to bag the vacant spot in the bullpen role. Epstein was also able to talk on Reyes as he kept a good routine to mention signings and their possible role in the club.
Epstein talked about Reyes and began by saying that the player has the ability to do well. His track record is up to the mark. On top of that, Dennys has an effective left-hand.
Epstein went on to say that Reyes fit the perfect description, given the available list of left-handed pitchers in the market. When Reyes was available in the market, Epstein said that the Red Sox jumped on the opportunity.
