has anyone out there done theology at a-level? i am considering taking this course because it looks more interesting to me than phsychology or sociology or art which are the only other options i can take. i am already doing the two englishes and business studies (well, have decided to) so will three essay subjects be too much or is it manageable? also, i am slightly worried that being a catholic doing this course might damage my own religion. is this a possibility?! thanks for the help in advance x*x

  1. I took Religious Studies O Level in 1978 and the A level in 1980. I was fortunate in having a Christian teacher who, like me, actually believed the subject she was teaching  - the syllabus for both O Level & A Level was 100% based on the Bible. She was also an extremely dedicated teacher, even coming after a back injury to teach us whilst lying on the desk with cushions! Nobody failed the exams, most achieving at least Grade B.

Nowadays Christian Education has been watered down because of a multi-faith pick & mix syllabus. Whilst I'm sure it is useful to know a little about other religions, if the syllabus for A Level had been of that ilk 1978-1980, I would probably not have bothered with it, especially if the teacher hadn't even believed herself.

By the way, the word 'Theology' means 'Study of God'. The best way you can do this is to read the Bible for yourself. I know that many catholics as well as protestants claim to be Christians but have never actually read the Book they claim to believe!

  2. 'damage your own religion' i'd assume you have to be pretty open minded about god in general. I doubt it will 'damage your religion' however you will probably have to accept truths you don't want to hear to pass the course.
