Question:

Theoretically what would happen if a very good Aikido martial artist fought in the UFC?

what I'm wondering is if the strikes are just too fast to avoid without the opponent committing too much...OR could the Aikido guy easily dodge and avoid all punches and kicks until the opponent REALLY committed and came in...which would allow the Aikido guy to do one of his moves

I also know the Aikido guy wouldn't have any attacks (unless he trained in some other art)...so he couldn't win by attacking...so it is just a theoretical question I guess on if Aikido would be enough to keep him safe from a real attack.

I mean say he was evenly matched skill-wise with his opponent

and maybe he had a few basic skills to help him get up if he got taken down

  1. he would be the first homicide in ufc history.

  2. The Aikido guy would lose.  Aikido practices with cooperative opponents that overcommit their attacks and are thrown.  UFC opponents strike high and low and tackle/flip/throw before working BJJ submissions or ground and pound.  Aikido wouldn't stand a chance - otherwise it would be the style that everyone used - no Kung Fu or Aikido in the UFC - too incomplete - usually there is a "full-contact" style such as boxing, savate or muay thai for standing and striking and a "full-resistance" style such as Judo, BJJ, sambo or wrestling for the ground work.

Taking into account that they were evenly matched would only make it worse on the Aikido stylist.

  3. Most people underestimate aikido here but I have to agree that going into a mma match using only one style is a disadvantage since today mma fighters are well trained in many styles.

  4. Ok, here's what would MOST LIKELY happen ( 90-95 % ):

Mixed Martial Artist of same weight would be in one corner, Aikido Expert in other.  MMA fighter would most likely throw some punches and then shoot for a takedown.  After securing the takedown, the Aikido Expert would realize that all those guys Steven Seagal threw around were choreographed dozens of times.  The MMA fighter would reign down punches on an "out of his element" Aikido Master.

Aikido Master would turn his head giving up his back to avoid punches and a Rear Naked Choke would secure the victory of the Average MMA fighter - probably under 3 minutes.  There's the most honest, descriptive, realistic outcome.  Even Steven Seagal would get his *** whooped by most MMA fighters his size.

  5. they'd be in the ufc if this was a good stylr of fighting i'm sure there not makeing millions teaching kids karate

  6. Man those sports are so different that's like saying how would a baseball player in a soccer game or how would a sumo wrestler do in pole vaulting.

  7. hed get his *** handed to him

  8. Aikido is not about defeating your opponent, but about protecting yourself and stopping his attack long enough to flee the area.  A true Aikido practitioner would never allow himself to showboat his techniques in such a way.

But if the situation ever occurred, the Aikido practitioner (assuming he only studied Aikido) would mearly be able to defend himself until one side passed out.

  9. ur joking right

  10. Aikido (as with all styles) is about training principles.  The techniques are just tools to that end.

A MAA fighter, I think also could care less about specific technique - they care about practical application which requires flexibility.

I think a good Aikidoka would do fine - the outcome wouldn't look graceful exactly, but so what - the principle is what matters and if the Aikidoka applies the principle better than their opponent, they win... no matter how ugly that outcome happens to be.

'Skilled' is a obtuse word.  Perhaps skills means 'its ugly, but effective'.  Or maybe it means 'its beautiful, but isn't functional'.

It takes skill to be beautiful as it takes skill to be functional... different applications of course, but both require skill non-the-less.

What do you mean when you say skill exactly?  I assume the effective variety right?

If I'm right, it comes down to who is more effective in their art than the other.

As always, its not the art, its the person (of course it takes more or less time in a given art, also depending on the person..... that's alot of variables having nothing to do with the style itself to judge the style don't you think)

  11. They would probally get killed if they went in with only using Aikido, most fighters dont really commit to punches like that.  They arent going to really have the time to catch their punch, they also wont know wrestling jiu jitsu to defend from submissions.  MMA is a sport that you need to be good at stand up and ground work.

  12. Aikido is not a striking based martial art it is based on defense and countering its a watered down version of the orginal aikijitsu just to let you know and this is what happens when somethen like what your talking about happens
