Question:

Theories of Deviance?

For a test coming up, I have to use a theory of deviance to explain the book "Nickel and Dimed". In this book, the author decides to leave her comfy life and joins the poor working class, trying to survive. She worked as a waitress in Florida, a maid in Maine, and at Wal-Mart in Minnesota. In the book she basically discovers how hard it is for the poor working class. Any ideas as to what theory of deviance this might fit under?

  1. That was an interesting book!  I would say "conflict theory" best describes this book, because it deals with a power differential.  Working class is low on the power hierarchy in our society.  If you don't like that one, then try these: "social-reality theory", or "phenomenological theory", or perhaps even "feminist theory".

  2. She did it for gain, notoriety....   Silver spoon socialite, w/ no fear of where her next meal will come from.    She lied, impersonated, exploited the character she tried to be.  Its hard to eat out of a cold can of tomatoes w/ a silver spoon....
