Question:

Theory Test?????

I am going to do my theory test on Monday and I get the multiple question part, which I'm fine on. However, I am really confused about the hazard perception video clips. When they say you should click evertime you see a hazard do they mean things like signs etc, as a driving harzard is defined as anything that causes you to slow down or change direction (which a sign etc would do!) Although if you had to click on every little hazard you saw then surely there would be too many?? (I'M CONFUSED!)

  1. OK let me clear this up, there are three types of hazard that you are looking out for

    1 Potential Hazard

    2 Developing Hazard

    3 Actual Hazard

now there are LOTS of potential hazards in life and on the hazard perception test, what you need to do is look out for these and notice when a potential hazard DEVELOPS

I'll give you and example: The video car is driving along a urban street with houses either side with high walls or hedges - scanning the pavements a reversing car starts to emerge out of a drive way - potential hazard - it continues to reverse onto the pavement towards the road - developing hazard - and as you get nearer it reverses out completly into the road and the path of the video car - actual hazard.

Now if you click when you see it first emerge you will either get 5 points or nothing for being to early so I suggest you click once straight away, and then a 2nd time one second later so that if you are too early for the 5 points, you should get 4 or 3 points one second later - make sense?

Signposts aren't technically hazards in themselves - unless there is a strong wind - but they do give a clue there maybe one ahead - if there is a sign saying traffic lights ahead you know to look out for the potential hazard ie. pedestrian approaching the crossing, the developing hazard - the pedestrian goes to press the button, and the actual hazard - the lights change and you have to stop.

I suggest you pop down somewhere like whsmiths or halfords or even ASDA and grab yourself a copy of "Driving Test Success - All Tests 07/08 edition" as it is only about £7 or £8 and would be well worth the money - you could always sell it on eBay afterwards - good luck on Monday :)

  2. On the day of your test you will be able to see what they are looking for on  a short video before you sit it.  You have to spot potential hazards like people walking on the road, car doors opening, cars coming out of junctions etc once you spot something like that you click once then you click again if the situation changes or develops e.g car coming to a junction = 1 click then it pulls in front of you = the 2 click.  Do not over do your clicks as this will result in a fail.  Only click what can and can develop in to a hazard, not signs etc

You have to get at least 43 out of 50 for the multiple and 44 out of 75 for the hazard.

Remember to take with you, your licence and the green part.

  3. You are cutting it fine for preparing yourself for your theory test.  I'm currently learning to drive, and I have myself a couple of DVD's (as well as the highway code) so I can prepare myself for when I decide I can take it.

The Hazard Perception test is quite simple.  You are looking at the screen as though you are driving the car.  You are basically looking for anything where you have to change your plan.

By this I mean, slow down, stop - signs can sometimes give you clues for a potential hazard, such as a narrow road where you'd have to give way.  DON'T KEEP CLICKING RANDOMLY - the computer will pick up on it, and fail you.  Most clips have one hazard, but some may have 2 (not 100% sure if there may be more, but I think it's 1, maximum 2).  You can click now and then, but you get more points the quicker you identify the hazard.

To ease your nerves, I would suggest you go out and buy the Hazard Perception DVD, as you'll then know what to expect.

  4. If you do not know the answer to this question, sack your instructor.

  5. Well, if you studied well you would know what hazards are, if you dont know what they are then you need to study more. I live in South Africa, so If I tell you any answers they may be incorrect your side.

    Good luck

  6. If you are as badly prepared as your question suggests then you need to see your instructor for advice immediately.

  7. By a hazard they mean things like a bus at a bus stop, i.e people walking out from infront of the bus or the bus pulling out with out indicating. Or a zebra crossing, an invalid electric chair. a school  a car waiting to pullout of a junction. not a road sign you should not need to slow down to read a road sign. you should be looking ahead reading the road as far ahead as you can see. DO NOT just click at random or click repeatedly you will be scored a zero if the software thinks you cheating!

    Good luck!
