  3. The Thoroughbred is the only breed allowed to race under Jockey Club Rules.

It is an artificial breed that was creasted in England about 300 years ago when 3 Arabian stallions were imported to the country - The Darley Arabian, The Godolphin Arabian and The Byerly Turk.  These stallions were bred to a group of about 40 English mares and the Thoroughbred breed was born.  Every single Thoroughbred on the planet can trace their bloodline back to one of these three stallions.

The Thoroughbred was bred for speed, stamina and elegance.  They were also bred to mature faster - hence why we are able to race them at the age of 2.
