Question:

There's a 20% discount on jeepney fares for students and senior citizens right?

well, the thing is, in going to school, i have to pay(considering that i'm a working adult) 10 pesos, but because i'm a student, i should have been granted the 20% discount right?...uhmm, the drivers, sometimes, would not give me any change when i give them 10P in amount. And when I give them a higher value, they still don't give me the discount.

And what's really irritating is that when i say(and I've noticed that they won't give any change unless students do this) "Student po", they just give me 1P. That's not the actual discount. i mean they should've given me a 2P discount.

Is this right?

  1. Do any other types of business also try to do this con on people? Like small mom & pop stores, etc?

  2. Yeah, most jeepney drivers are like that. They won't give you change unless you ask for it. And if the change is not right, they still won't give you the correct amount unless you notice it and ask for it again.

Just say "estudyante po" all the time. The drivers and conductors face the road, away from you. It's not like they will always notice everyone's attire so it's very likely that they won't recongnize you as a student in his school uniform. :)

  3. the only fair solution is to pay in EXACT change and when paying tell the driver "estudyante po"

  4. I've encountered this loads of times & I've learned my lesson well.

I always pay the exact amount.

If I give a larger bill & this happens, I ask the driver how much the student fare is. He'll be forced to answer & give the right amount of change. Or you could directly tell him that he didn't give you the right change.

  5. yea sa long as you have your id and its on weekdays only. no discount on holidays and weekends..

  6. Everytime you pay always say "studyante po" that's make them understandable or maybe you look old enough to say student.

  7. are you in tertiary, in graduate studies or law school? if you're still in college, yes you could avail of the 20% discount but if you are pursuing higher studies, you are no longer covered by it. (you said you're a working adult, did i get you right?:) )

or better yet, always bring with you tons of loose change, that way you'll no longer be irritated by those drivers.

  8. Well, if you are filipino then you should know that no filipino is going to give you back any change.  Thats why you should always pay with exact change only.

  9. always have coins handy there is no sense arguing w/ a tight driver, they are doing this because they have mouths to feed. nursing son or daughter to finished. Always pay in 8.50 or 20% discount from the fare matrix. I encountered a bothersome driver on the way home and instead of walking a half kilometer walk i decided to ride the jeep bec. i was dead tired playing nanny with the kids, i payed the regular fare. instead of  6 php.. drivers swallow all, even the mockery of senior citizens..all that for a few coins. so lets be rationale.
