Question:

There's a bat in my house, I'm the only one awake, and I'm 14. Help?!?

Yeah... um I'm sitting here, and a bat flew by my head across the computer screen.

This is a serious question.

It went behind the book shelf, how do I get it out?

Will it get hurt if it stays inside all night and I wait for my dad to get it out?

I'd get it out, but I don't want to get bitten or wake anyone up.

Any help would be nice at the moment.

Thanks!

Best answer, 10 points.

  4. If you can get ahold of a thick sweater or shirt, try and capture the animal in that. Gently through the shirt/sweater over it, make sure it cannot escape and carry it ouside.

If you leave it, you may not be able to find it in the house again. =D Even though waiting would not harm it, but you may lose it.

Just try and get it cornered with something soft that you can 'net' it in but that is thick enough that the animal can't harm you.

    And good luck. =D

  5. Close all the doors to other rooms.  Open a door and a couple windows (take the screens off of course) in the room that the bat is in.  Stand still quietly by the wall and watch and see if the bat flies out.  They use echo-location and should find their way out pretty quick.  Being in a room is very confusing and disorienting to a bat.  They will fly around for a bit and then find somewhere to rest.  Then they may fly around again looking for a place to get out.  Do not try to catch it or grab it because they will bite.  What I did is open the front door and stood outside behind it until I saw the bat fly out.

  6. yous gonn be a vampire soon ! hahaha jokes.

I suggest you just close the door and leave the window open and jsut get outta the room cos the batmight have rabies or something.

wake up your parents or something i mean its a bat. you can get attacked ot something i'd definatly scream at the top of my lungs if something flew over my head and my budgie was still in its cage.. hahah

  7. its nothing t be scared of i get them in my attic dont worry about it there harmless

  8. Open the windows and doors and then tap on the bookcase to scare the bat out.It should fly out the window or door. To catch it,you place a coffee can or other container over the bat, then slide a piece of cardboard between the can and the wall or whatever the bat is clinging to.Then put it outside on a tree and it will fly away. Don't touch it with your bare hands, though, wear gloves. If it does stay in all night,it won't hurt it,but when you catch it,put it in a dark place, like behind a shed or shady tree where it can stay until dark.

Edit: Demon is right! A heavy towel would be best!

  9. Here's what you could do without making as much noise:

Keep in mind - Bats are attracted to light and sound.

Open your window and turn on the outside light.

If it doesn't directly attract the bat, it will attract a swarm of insects that will eventually lure the bat to come out (insects are food). And while you're at it, put some strong or sweet-scented flowers near the light too.

If you want to do it fast, these might make some noise:

First things first. Do the above-mentioned.

Then wear something for protection like thick clothes, gloves and cap or simply just wear your blanket all over you. Get a flashlight and point it to where the bat might be hiding. Tap on the the shelf to scare it out. But I'm sure you might be scared of it too. If so, get something long but not pointed so you won't hurt the poor thing. Gently poke on it so it will be forced to move out.

And lastly, when you've done all of these, turn off all your bedroom lights including the computer screen.

It's best to ask help from your parents. Don't risk it yourself. Better be safe than sorry.

  10. dude,

GET OUT! wake your parents up. its better for you to get in a little trouble than for you to get bitten. don't trap him..don't do anything else. try not to scare him because he might attack. remember, he's in an "odd" place, well for him. make sure he doesnt get into the living room or anywhere else in your house, cuz then it'll be way more difficult for your dad to catch him.

  11. YEah get out of the roomm but before you do open the window. THEN wake up your parents and tell them there is a fu**ing bat in your roooooom! lol

    Good Luck!

  12. Please don't risk catching it.

It is unusual for bats to be inside unless it's an abandoned room, so I'd instantly be worried about it being ill with rabies, or something else.

Unless you have a humane bat trap floating around your house, there's no safe way- to you or the bat- to catch it, right now. The 'sweater' idea is risky- the bat can still get free and bite you- and also makes a lot of noise, and there's no certainity that if you open the windows that it WILL escape- or even that other bats won't come in from it's sonic distress calls.

Either wake up your parents to see what they can do, or- better option- sleep elsewhere for now, leaving your bedroom door closed.

I'm not saying 'don't care if it gets hurt', I'm just saying- YOU'RE more likely to get hurt and be in trouble in this situation than the bat. They have sonic understanding and know where things are, so it's unlikely to get hurt.

Just don't risk it. It'll be fine in a shut off room tonight, and your parents can decide what to do in the morning (catch it or call someone to catch it for you.)

  13. Don't try to catch it yourself, have one of your parents catch it.  Better still, have them call animal control for instructions.

And once caught it shouldn't be released, it needs to be tested for rabies so you know if you've been exposed.  It's been in your house, so there is a risk you've had a scratch or something that has been in contact with something contaminated.  It may have peed or pooped somewhere, so you need to know.

  14. Sleep in another room away from the bat for the night.

  15. i think that hawdware stores sell bat traps
