I can't figure out what it does. When I put my mouse over it, the pointer turns into a pointing finger. When I click on it once, Firefox blinks. If I click on it again, no blink (until I click on it again). The icon looks like a gray square with a white push pin angled down on the white bottom left corner of the square.

  1. Are you talking about Stop button??  It looks like a push pin on the gray square.  Stop button is to stop searching, or if you are opening a wrong website by mistake.

You have to add Text to your icon.   Right click on this bar to get pulldown menu. Click on Customize.  And in the window with the a little arrow  find  Icons and Text  .. make sure you have it shown in the window ... click Done.
