Last summer, I traveled to both London and Paris.

I loved London..a lot. I loved Paris also...but there was something special about Paris...

What do you think it is?

  1. I think that it has everything that other cities have, except all in the one place.

Two things I didn't like though, v.v.v.v.v rude Parisians and the smell of urine which seems to seep through the whole city.

  2. For the museums, beautiful riverside, amazing views, great food and drinks-- just to name a few. Plus Paris is less expensive than London!

  3. All of the above.  And, seriously, they have the most unique and interesting bathrooms in the hotels and other public establishments that I've ever seen.

  4. They seem to work less intensely and to appreciate their own city more. The English are either working or slacking off in a more or less mindless way. The French seem more alert, even if they're just sitting at a table and soaking up the sun.

I was unraveling some knitting I'd got wrong as I walked along the Left Bank to the subway. A man stopped me and asked, "Vous etes Penelop?" Eventually, we worked out that he was referring to the story of Odysseus' wife. When I asked what he did, he replied that he was an elevator repairman. The idea of having that same conversation in London or in the US, my home, is just ludicrous.

  5. First I want to agree completely with Sarah C's answer above. To find a working class person who knows the Odyssey and makes a casual reference to it in conversation is very French.

I love having political discussions (or even arguments)  in France because people seem so involved and informed while my fellow Americans (especially here in rural Texas) see everything in terms of black and white and hold their own assumptions to be Holy Writ delivered on tablets of stone from on high.

The ambiance of Paris is a delight and everything is so comfortable (for lack of a better word).  I love to just cafe sit, have a glass of wine, maybe a sandwich or some other little snack and watch the world go by.

Whether it is a sunny spring day or grey rainy day in winter, Paris is simply beautiful.

  6. I think Paris has something special because it is portrayed as being THE romantic city :) It just has this whole feel to it when you walk in the street, you feel transported and also makes you feel a bit nostalgic about something but you can't really put your finger on it. I have lived in Paris most of my life and everytime I go I learn something new about the city, there's never a dull moment over there really :)
