There's something wrong with my guinea pig's p***s area.?

I have a 2-year-old male abyssinian guinea pig and he is the love of my life. I noticed about a week ago that around where his tail would be (if he had one) it was all greasy, but I didn't have time to take him to the vet because I was going out of town. When I came back today, I went to check to see if it was still wet and greasy, and it wasn't anymore. But I noticed that there is a large, reddish-pinkish growth where his p***s area is, and it's all shriveled and gross. I'm not sure if it's painful because I didn't want to touch it. My mom said it's just his p***s, but It definitely doesn't look like a guinea pig's p***s should.

I am looking to make a vet appointment but so far haven't been able to find a vet that I would trust with my guinea pig.

Anyway if anyone has any idea what this might be, or has experienced something similar, I would really appreciate some insight.

Thanks!

  1. Guinea pigs have grease glands near rear end and they often mark their territory using it. It can be smelly, but it can make their bottom area very greasy. That's very normal boar behavior.

Some guinea pig's p***s shafts are very shrively and have the appearance of being very irritated. I have one boy who has always had a very shriveled shaft, while the others look more normal. Sometimes this causes things to get caught in it and you may need to clean it out. Sometimes this is not the case, and the shaft just looks like that.

I'd take a damp q-tip (with either mineral oil or luke warm water) and see if he needs cleaning. Adult boars often do. Just press above the shaft, there should be a triangular lump there. The p***s should pop out and if there's any hair, gunk, or hay stuck in there gently clean it off with the q-tip. He won't like this, but you may have to do it. A vet appointment would be a waste of money when you can easily clean at home. It may become something you need to do a lot, but like I said his shaft may just look like that.
