He keeps talking to me and telling me stories.I honestly can't understand a word he's saying. I keep responding with nods and mmm hmms. Hopefully, that will suffice. How do you deal with people with thick accents that you cannot understand? What is the polite way to let them know that you cannot understand what they are saying? I have this problem a lot, working at a hotel.

  1. Crise! Don't nod and assent to something you don't understand. Last time I did that I was consenting to going home to some guy's house.  I didn't know that until we pulled up to his door, then a lot of NO! worked pretty well to save me.

  2. Look at him and ask "You like to see homos naked?"

  3. I would ask him to speak more slowly and a little louder

  4. Tell him politely to speak up or to speak clearly... I don't think that would bother him, because in that way you'd show interest in what he is saying.

  5. give him a Chris Tucker and say I CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I'd just stick to the mmmmmmmmmmmmm hmmmmmms and smile. LOL

  7. Just tell him he has such a strong accent that you have a hard time understanding all he says and say it with a smile. Honesty is not rude.

Chances are he will be slightly amused and he can probably work to be more articulate if he wishes. I know I can clear up much of my accent if I try. I find it amusing that people 3000 miles form my home have told me,  "Man you are from Texas." after hearing me speak. I cannot hear my own accent and chances are he is unaware if your difficulty in understanding him.

  8. You tell them, "I'm sorry, but I can't understand you to well, could you slow down a little?"
