  1. Here's how you can get up to 11:

In the north, there is: a celestial pole, a geographic pole, a magnetic pole, a geomagnetic pole, and a pole of inaccessibility. (That's 5.)

In the south it's the same (another 5) plus there is a ceremonial south pole making 11.

There's no ceremonial pole in the north, I guess because around there is just drifting ice rather than solid land like in the south - that's why there's an odd number.

    Now what are the poles?

Celestial: the point where the Earth's axis of rotation meets the surface.

Geographic: a "fixed" point near the celestial pole. This is used because the Earth's axis of rotation isn't actually fixed, but "wobbles" about a bit e.g. the "Chandler wobble".

Magnetic: based on the earth's *actual* magnetic field

Geomagnetic: based on the closest approximation of the earth's magnetic field as a simple dipole (which it isn't)

Inaccessibility: the point furthest from the ocean and therefore the "hardest to get to"

  2. I am only familiar with one pole each: the North Pole and the South Pole.

If there are more, I would like to know about it myself.

  3. I can't see how there could be an odd number of poles, but:

    magnetic pole

    geographic pole

    celestial poles (relate to galaxy)

    maybe more mapping related poles?
