There are certain files on my pc that I wish to TOTALLY remove. I downloaded Eraser 5.86 and began to erase certain documents/downloads from my PC however I LOST free space. I went from having 11.0 GB to only having 2.25 GB. My question is two part, what can I do to recover my free space. And if Eraser 5.86 is not a good program what program is? I am NOT donating my pc, I am NOT giving it away I just want some documents gone.

  1. I think that there are some good, cheap software products ut that will help you completly delete the files. I think that a good software product would be if you type in on google file incinerator and that may bring up some good hits.

  2. That's really odd to lose space when deleting documents. Sorry for asking the obvious, but did you empty the recycle bin? I found a review that had 143 people giving Eraser 5.86 4 stars out of 5, so the program should be ok. This may be tedious, but you can track down the offending folder and see what is taking up that space. Right click on a folder and select properties and see how big the folder is, keep going until you find a folder that has alot more in it than you'd expect. Then go into that folder and check the folders inside there. Keep going until you get to the root of the problem. A good place to start is the Documents and settings folder. Programs sometimes use that as a default place to keep files, you might find music or videos there you didn't expect. Or Eraser 5.86 might have a folder there that it's putting stuff in for some reason. Good luck.

  3. the second guy is wut i was about to say

  4. Certain applications use 'random data' in order to wipe the free space that a file was using, this creates a file of the same size in its place which consists entirely of random characters.

This is then deleted in the standard fashion after the process finishes.

Unfortunately, if the application does not completely finish its job, then these file are left behind taking up a considerable chunk of your hard drive.

I found this out recently when  I ran a similar program called KillDisk.

All you should have to do is run a Disk Cleanup, from the Accessories/System Tools menu and then reboot your machine.

    Worked for me.

    Good luck.

  5. go to Start click Control panel and click Add or Remove and then select on a application that you want to remove.

  6. Try a reboot and then check your free space. If no improvement do this.

    1)Double click my computer

2)Right click drive C (or the drive letter with issues) select properties.

3)Click the disc cleanup button. When it's done scanning, click ok.

4)Still in properties, click on the tools tab.

5)At the top (error checking), click check now. A window will open. Select automatically fix file system errors. Click start.

    6) If you get a notice asking if you want to run it on next reboot, click yes.

    7) Close all programs and reboot. When Windows restarts, your free space should be back to normal.
