i've just got some ex-battery hens. they've only been with me two days, but suddenly the garden is filled with flies - great big green ones. they dont bother the chickens, but they certainly bother me. are the flies attracted to the chickens droppings? how do i get rid of the flies without hurting the chickens? i have two young boys who like to watch the chickens but i dont really like them being surrounded by a cloud of flies, it's disgusting. what should i do?

  1. my advice would be to move the chickens or clean up there droppings.

    hope this helps.

  2. Its the chicken poo ,that attracts them, the hens will eat the flies, but if you get a hard brush and sweep up the poo every couple of days then bag it up and pop it in the bin it should keep the flies down,or clear the poo with a hose.

  3. Sounds like you have Kentucky Flied chickens!

  4. Sounds like there is some rotting food in the  pen or there is something dead nearby & the flies are comming to drink the water.Blow flies do not gather like that if there is nothing rotton  around.

  5. Chickens live in S**t - S**t attracts flies - there is your problem.

Chickens aren't clean birds - you need to clear up twice a day or more in this weather.

  6. my opinion would be to stick some fly paper in there, but high enough to where the paper wouldn't stick to the chickens.  then i would also clean it out at the same time.  or maybe you should have chris angel go there and hipnotize the flies to tell them to never return.  i saw him hipnotize a chicken once on tv.  thought it wuz funny as h**l.

  7. The Flies are attracted to your Chicken's droppings, but this mainly happens in Hot sultry weather,

The best thing to do is clean up after them, but don't worry soon as we get wet weather they will be gone.
