  1. The problem is the government has decided on some number of spaces as a percentage of the total. It doesn't matter if many handicapped people use that parking lot or not, that percentage is set aside.  I once worked at a boat ramp where 6 percent of the parking spaces must be set aside for handicapped.  Two thirds of the spaces were for car/boat trailer parking.  How many handicapped people do you know that launch a boat and go boating.  I met one.  Most days 12 spaces were empty all day, yet we were not allowed to let other people use those spaces even when everything else was full.  I would not bring global warming in, but the system is broke.

  2. You obviously have better access to handicapped parking where you are. They are rare where I am and any we do have are usually taken. I have bad legs etc and if it wasn't for those parks I couldn't do much if any shopping chores at all. Please realise most handicapped try to shop away from peak times to keep out of peoples way; some people are very rude and think we're deliberately holding them up.

  3. no

  4. yeah ......there are usually 10 handicap spaces in the average lot. I am SURE thats the cause of global warming

  5. At the peak hours of shopping, the few parking spots around here are taken. People who use a cane have said, if they can't find a handicap spot, they look for a cart so it may be used like a walker.  Makes it easier for them to walk.

  6. Something that always really surprises me is how many handicapped people drive sports cars and pimped out SUV's.... why dont they drive mobility scooters??

  7. LOL yes!  As a mid-thirties healthy male when i go to a shopping centre and all the spaces seem to be restricted from one group or another such as "parents with prams", "handicapped", "senior citizens"

I mean how am I ever going to suffer heart disease in my mid-forties (which is my cultural right) if I get all that horrible exercise walking a few extra metres to and from my car?

Perhaps you should be a little more understanding and a little less selfish?

  8. If they are rarely used, the answer is 'yes'. Parking lot behaviour is funny though. Is six feet more to walk really going to break you? I try to park farther away in order to do some walking to burn off calories. Maybe more people should try this.

  9. Except at the Piccadilly.  They only need about 6 non-handicapped spaces.

  10. In my experience the people driving circles on parking lots looking for a space are the ones trying to get a space close to the entrance. There's usually plenty of empty spaces further away, but many people are just lazy to walk.

When I'm able to walk without much problems I go straight to the parking spaces that are far away from the building. There are ALWAYS some empty spaces there, so this saves me both gas and time driving circles. Plus, the exercise is good for me and I love to use my feet when I am able to, because I know what it's like to not be able to walk.

I don't think there are too many handicapped parking spaces. Even though they may all be empty at some time of the day, they may all be full at another time.

  11. It is the law of unintended consequences.  Everytime they enact a law with perferctly good intentions, that law gets ends up getting abused by people with an agenda.  The endangered species act is another good example.   I can't go hiking in a particular trail because I might interfere with the mating of the western arroyo toad as if I would.

  12. Another classic example of government gone wrong.  There almost always in the wrong spots.  It must be real easy to get the H/C sign, as how often have we seen people have one and dart into the store, like an Olympian track star ?

  13. On the other hand, if you pulled into the first parking place you see even if it's further away, just think how much gas and time you'd save -- and how much extra exercise you'd get!
