There is a big giant X on the road of the culdesac on my street. What is it for???

My parents say its for the airport nearby but I never notice any planes passing over that area. So what would it be for???

How big is the X?  Sometimes around my area the gas companies or utilities or whoever mark the road when they're planning to do road work or to fix sewer lines or something, so whoever is doing the work knows where not to dig.
