How did this "legend" get started anyway?

Is there any proof that the story is true and that this actually happened?

My friend the only clue they have to think this could be true is a galleon defender sank near to pearl Island in Panama, this kind of ship was used to guide valious cargo on galleons by that time, and they said that the route these vessels were taking was the route used to arrive in Costa Rica.
