  1. You haven't said where in the world you were when you heard this sound, but rattlesnakes make a loud buzzing sound with their rattles when disturbed. It could've been that if you were in rattlesnake territory.


  2. Locusts I believe make an annoying buzzing sound.

  4. on wikipedia...search cicadas....they have a recorded sound bite there that might help you identify

  5. Almost certainly cicadas.  When their periodic population irruptions occur, they can be heard from great distances.  Those beggars are the loudest buzzers I've heard in nearly forty years of desert living.  Look for the dried empty husks or shells on trees.
