  1. When it says that the signal strength is excellent, it means TO THE ROUTER only.

Try several different websites, because the one you are trying may be down. If more than 1 gives the same error, contact your ISP.

  2. Log onto your router and check the status of your internet connection.

  3. Lots of possible causes:

Your wireless strength indicates the connection between the wireless device in your laptop and your wireless router. There is obviously not a problem with this.

Are you sure that your internet explorer knows to connect through the wireless adapter? If it is trying to connect via a dial-up, USB or LAN connection, that would cause this error. Open internet explorer, click on Tools > Internet Options > Connections and check your connection method.

Alternatively, run the network setup wizard from Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Communication > Network Setup Wizard.

Of course this will only ensure that your Internet Explorer is connecting using the right method. There are other possibilities . . .

Check physical connections - make sure your router is connected to your modem, ADSL filter or cable outlet, depending on the type of broadband you have.

If all connections are sound, try the following.

Click Start > Run then type CMD in the run box. You will see a DOS screen. Type ipconfig then press enter.

You should get four lines of numbers. If you don't then the problem is at your end. If you do then type "tracert www.yahoo.com".

Ignore the lines of numbers that follow. If you get all the way to Yahoo then the connection is sound and the problem is with your software. If you get part way there the issue is with a server between you and Yahoo. If you get the message "unable to resolve target host" then contact your ISP for support.

  4. Shut down your firewall then try again, if internet works reload firewall and reconfigure it.

  5. This only means it can talk to the  wireless link. It does not mean it is talking to the router. You need to use the wireless card connection program to find your router, set a matching encryption key to the router's key and connect.

  6. Most of the time, for me just a simple unplug of the router works.

Unplug it for 10-15 secs the plug it back in.

I know you probably done it, but its worth a try.

Also, it might be your ISP's fault.

  7. I have exactly the same problem when the phone companys network is busy connectivity is lost.My phone company has agreed to cancel the contract clause 18 mnth minimum.Meaning that l can find a different server with a better connectivity.I was using it on my PC not a laptop.Good luck.

  8. Hi Danny

I have the identical situation. Have tried switching off the router, switching off the computer, logging onto Firefox or Internet Explorer. Sometimes you think yes! because it suddenly works. I have now however come to the conclusion it is just coincidence. I contacted Pipex about the problem and they came back with a list of checks which basically laid the blame on the BT line. In other words nothing to do with them. Thinking about changing provider but don't want to enter into a 12 month ADSL contract just to find the same problem or worse. I assume a cable service would eliminate this problem. .

  9. This could be very complicated...first of all, what is your router make and model, check the latest firm ware of your model...ie. linksys does issue latest firmware over time to fix issues.

Give us more info...I am sure many competent people willing to share possible solutions.
