George Washington was the first President under the Constitution.  There was Presidents under the older type of government that wasn't working well which lead to the present Constitutional Republic that we have today.

George Washington was the first president as we know the role today.  The presidents under the Articles of Confederation served a very different and more minor role than that of the executive branch as spelled out under the Constitution.
