    just an industry term.

  4. Light rail just means it is system all to itself and not connected to the nationwide system and so operates under a slightly different set of regualtions. Regualr passenger trains are called regular passenger trains. In the US it is almost totally Amtrak.

  6. In my opinion, Light-rail is just a slogan to reduce complaints when they install it... to keep residents from whining about "TRAINS" !!

    In the San Francisco / San Jose Bay Area, the VTA (light-rail) runs on Standard-Gauge track as does Muni and others I believe.
